Kangaroo Island
With only just over a dozen wineries dotting the island and almost 300 acres of planted vines, the quality of grapes that have been seen coming from the scatted vineyards is very high. With a good maritime climate suited to viticulture, Kangaroo Island produces fruit that is rich and robust. The soil topography is varied with red or red/brown sandy loam or clay soils overlying limestone in most parts, as in most cases with this soil type water retention and therefore irrigation issues must always be addressed. With a slightly cooler average summer temperature than Adelaide (25c) but higher humidity (64%) can cause problems such as unwanted Botrytis and powdery mildew. Strong winds come straight off the Indian Ocean from the south east but many vineyards use the natural terrain of cliffs to protect themselves, birds are still the major viticultural problem.
