Barossa Valley
The Barossa is Australia’s most famous wine region, producing rich, full bodied wines that reflect generations of winemaking heritage. Established by European settlers, the region melds traditional Old World values with New World innovation to create a vibrant, proud community focused on the annual cycle of grape growing and winemaking. There’s a warm welcome associated with Barossa wines, evolved over one hundred and sixty years of winemaking. Home to some of the oldest Shiraz vines in the world, established in the 1840s, the Barossa is made up of two distinct regions – Barossa Valley and Eden Valley. Both are renowned for the red varieties of Shiraz, Grenache, Mourvedre and Cabernet Sauvignon. Eden Valley is the home to spectacular dry Rieslings while the Barossa Valley produces richly flavoured Semillon. The Barossa also has small parcels planted to other varieties such as Chardonnay and Viognier. More than 120 wine producers call the Barossa home including the most famous names in Australian wine and a wealth of smaller artisan producers. They work hand in hand with over 700 independent grape growers to create the region’s iconic wines and continue its legacy of authentic wine production. Soils are varied and range from deep alluvial sands to rich red soil over limestone to cracking black clays and to shallow sandy loams over gravel in the ranges. The region has warm-to-hot dry summers and cool wet winters. The Barossa has approximately 12780 hectares under vine, with 65% planted to its red varieties.
