Langhorne Creek
Langhorne Creek, the best-kept secret in Australian Viticulture! A natural treasure hidden within the Fleurieu Peninsula – 70 km South-East of Adelaide. Langhorne Creek is one of Australia’s oldest grape growing regions in South Australia, with the first plantings in the 1860’s by Frank Potts. From these pioneering days Langhorne Creek has become one of the fastest growing wine regions with approximately 6500 hectares of vines and more than 30 wine companies. The Bremer River is not only the setting for majestic river gum scenes, but also a water source for many of the vineyards. Situated on the natural flood plains of the Bremer and Angas Rivers, Langhorne Creek’s unique feature is the capability of the near river vineyards to flood, and the alluvial loamy soil gives the vines the consistency to produce outstanding regional wines. The newer vineyards, on sandy loam and under drip irrigation are adding complexity and excitement to the regional selection. The region experiences a wonderful temperate climate as a result of cooling breezes coming from the Great Southern Ocean and off Lake Alexandrina. This produces consistent growing conditions. Langhorne Creek is renowned for outstanding Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz delivering soft tannins and full-flavoured fruit driven palates, with excellent depth of colour. Verdelho is a very successful white variety in the region and several emerging and alternative varieties are also gaining prominence. The natural beauty, the history and fabulous innovative wines – what better reason to share the secret! Wineries In This RegionLake Breeze |
